Concrete effect plastering in Bishopsworth, Bristol. A soft, mottled grey finish with the look of poured concrete, applied to any sound wall without the weight or the cold feel of the real thing.
Poured concrete is heavy, cold and awkward to work with indoors. Concrete effect plaster gives you the same plain grey surface with the same subtle blotching, but it is only a few millimetres thick and it feels warm to touch. It goes on plasterboard, brick or existing plaster.
More Information
The mottling comes from how the coats are laid on, not from a pattern. We work the trowel in different directions and vary the pressure so the tone shifts across the wall. Too even and it looks like grey paint. Too heavy and it looks patchy. Getting it halfway between is where the practice comes in.
Left bare, the finish is matt and slightly porous. A sealer keeps marks and moisture out and is worth having in a kitchen, bathroom or hallway. Sealed, it wipes down with a damp cloth. In a bedroom or living room you can leave it unsealed for a flatter, chalkier look.
They are close cousins but not identical. Microcement is a cement based coating that can also go on floors. Concrete effect plaster is a lime based finish for walls that mimics the same look. For a wall the result is very similar, and we would talk you through which suits your room.
It can, provided it is sealed and there is enough clearance from the burners. Many Bristol kitchens use it as a splashback for a seamless run with no grout lines to clean. Check your hob manufacturer's clearance figures, and for a gas hob a glass or tile panel directly behind is safer.
Not if the wall underneath is stable and properly prepared. Hairline cracks come from movement in the background, not from the finish itself, so we check the wall and reinforce joints before starting. On new plasterboard we tape and fill the joints first for the same reason.
Concrete effect finishes have become a big part of what we do, alongside the polished Venetian work. It suits people who want something plainer than marble but more interesting than emulsion. Daniel Conn Plastering and Tiling applies it across Bristol on single walls, kitchen islands and full rooms.
