Floor tiling in Bishopsworth, Bristol for kitchens, bathrooms, hallways and utility rooms. Porcelain, ceramic and natural stone laid on a floor that has been checked and levelled first.
A floor that dips will crack tiles or leave them lipping at the edges. Concrete floors usually need a self levelling compound. Timber floors need overboarding so there is no bounce. We check the floor with a straight edge across the whole room, not just in the middle, before anything is laid.
More Information
Tiles and underfloor heating suit each other, because tile carries heat well and does not mind the warmth. The mats or pipes are covered in a levelling compound before tiling. Once the floor is finished the heating is brought up slowly over several days rather than turned straight on.
Floors move more than walls, especially over timber. A flexible adhesive and grout takes up that movement. Around the edges of the room, and across any doorway, the joint is left open and filled with silicone so the floor has somewhere to go rather than cracking.
Floor tiling is the part of our tiling work with the most preparation in it, and the part where cutting corners shows up soonest. Daniel Conn Plastering and Tiling has laid floors across Bristol for 15 years, in kitchens, hallways and bathrooms, working with the customer's own tiles or sourcing them.

STILL NOT SURE?
Not directly. Floorboards flex and move with humidity, which cracks both tiles and grout. The floor needs overboarding with tile backer board or plywood fixed at close centres first, or a decoupling membrane. Done properly a timber floor takes tiles perfectly well and lasts.
Usually 24 hours before light foot traffic and around 48 before furniture or appliances go back. Grouting normally happens the day after tiling. Cold rooms slow the adhesive down, so in winter we allow a little longer and tell you the dates when we quote.
Yes, hallways are one of the best places for them, because tile handles wet shoes and mud far better than carpet or timber. Choose a porcelain with a decent slip rating for a front hallway. Darker grout stays looking better than white in a route that gets used all day.
