Wall tiling in Bishopsworth, Bristol for bathrooms, kitchens, utility rooms and porches. Ceramic, porcelain, mosaic and natural stone, set out properly and fixed to a wall we have prepared ourselves.
Setting out means deciding where the full tiles go and where the cuts land before any adhesive is mixed. Done well, the cuts end up in corners and behind fittings. Done badly, you get a thin sliver of tile at eye level. We mark the wall out and check it with you first.
More Information
Tiles are only as sound as what is behind them. Plasterboard needs to be firmly fixed with no flex. Old plaster needs checking for hollow spots. Fresh skim should not be tiled at all, because the adhesive is stronger than the skim and will pull it off. We sort the background first.
Neat edges are what separates a good tiling job from an average one. Internal corners get a silicone joint so they can move. External corners get a trim or a mitred edge. Around sockets, pipes and window reveals the cuts are marked and made one at a time rather than guessed.
STILL NOT SURE?
You should not tile onto fresh skim at all. If a wall has been skimmed, wait until it is fully dry and seal it, and even then keep the tiles light. For a proper tiled wall we prefer to leave the backing coat bare or fit backer board, which is a far stronger base for adhesive.
Sometimes, if the old tiles are firmly stuck, flat and clean. It saves the mess of hacking off, but it thickens the wall, which causes problems around window reveals, sockets and door frames. In most bathrooms we would rather take the old tiles off and start from a proper base.
Larger tiles usually suit small rooms better, because fewer grout lines make the wall look less busy. Very large formats can be awkward if the room is out of square, since every cut shows. Mosaics work well in recesses and niches rather than across a whole wall.
Wall tiling has run alongside our plastering for 15 years, and the two feed each other. Knowing how a wall is built and where it is likely to move makes a difference to how tiles are fixed. Most of our Bristol wall tiling is bathrooms and kitchens, for homeowners and for builders on refurbishments.
