Damaged plaster repair in Bishopsworth, Bristol. Cracks, blown patches, water damage and holes left by pipework or rewiring, put right and blended back into the wall around them.
Most damage comes from one of four things: a leak, movement in the building, damp coming through a wall, or someone chasing in cables and pipes. Each needs a different fix, so the first job is working out which it is. Repairing plaster over an active leak just means doing it twice.
More Information
A single hole or a short crack can be cut back, filled and blended so it disappears under paint. Once a wall has several patches, or the damage runs across a corner, skimming the whole wall gives a better result and often costs little more than chasing each patch separately.
The trick is feathering the edges so there is no ridge where new meets old. Rushed patches show up as soon as light falls across the wall at an angle. We work the edges out wide and check the wall from the side before we call it done, not straight on.
Yes, once the leak is fixed and the ceiling has dried out properly. Water stained plaster that is still firm can often be sealed and skimmed. Where the plaster has sagged or come away from the laths it has to be cut out and replaced. We check by pressing before deciding.
Most are not. Fine hairline cracks are usually shrinkage or old paint layers moving and are easily filled. Cracks wider than a coin edge, ones that run diagonally from a corner, or ones that keep coming back after filling are worth having a builder or surveyor look at first.
A small patch is usually ready in a few days, since there is not much thickness of plaster holding water. A larger repaired area needs a week or two. Wait until the patch has gone the same pale colour as the rest of the wall, then mist coat before the topcoat.
Plaster repair is often the first job a new customer calls us for, and a good share of our Bristol work has started with one damaged wall. After 15 years we can usually tell from the pattern of the cracking what caused it, which matters more than the repair itself. We say so plainly if something else needs sorting first.
